Because they work

I agree they work at lowering Cholesterol, but is the problem. You probably already know this, but there is a growing shift in thought within the cardiovascular medical field on how important "low" cholesterol really is in prevent heart attacks/heart disease. Once thought anything over 200 was unacceptable........ now not so much of a concern if all the other boxes are checked good.

I am 47 with total cholesterol of 265 and my doctor said while he would prefer the number lower it wasn't a concern to him because of my overall cardiovascular health was excellent. We did the Boston Heart Test and I have zero inflammation and beside the cholesterol number there were no red flags. I have had elevated cholesterol since the first time I had it checked in my 20's and they wanted me to get on medicine back then. Never did and no issues. I eat healthy, exercise, don't use tobacco, etc. but my body just likes high cholesterol.

It appears someone finally smart enough decided to find out why all these people with low cholesterol have heart attacks or heart disease. While I know cholesterol plays a part in cardiovascular issues, it's not as simple as getting it lowered and all is good. A lot more to look at.

No offense Doc, but I am against taking any meds unless it's necessary.... unfortunately the medical community (not accusing you) in general has taken the stance of throwing pills at people just because the "complain" about something. Medicine is about just what it's name is says.... "Medicine". It should be about wellness, finding the root cause and fixing that instead of just treating a symptom. You may be one of the good ones, however some people just like you that went to all those years of med school are not don't do the right thing or have the correct intentions. I am sure you can agree with that.

And for the record my Dr has waited several years before getting me on meds. We tried diet, niacin, fish oils and etc

My dad had quadruple bypass in his 50’s, my grand father had same thing in his 60’s
