The final breakdown of the Miami Defense brings us to the DBs. This unit prides themselves on creating turnovers. They are going to be aggressive.

Let’s take a look at the Defensive Backs:

DBs
CB- Michael Jackson ... 6’2 195lb Sr. No, he’s not MJ reincarnated. Or maybe he is? He’s very talented. 2017 was his first real year of action where he started 10 games but played in all 13. He finished with 43 tackles, 4 INT, and 5 PBU. He recently garnered preseason All-ACC honors. He is their best corner.

CB- Trajan Bandy ... 5’9 180lb So. Not positive on his height, I’ve seen 5’9-5’10 listed on different sites. Bandy is the presumed starter opposite of Jackson, but he will be pushed for the job in fall camp. He’s undersized, but is said to be a “pit bull”. He is a versatile DB who shifts from the nickle to the outside depending on the situation. As a true freshman last year, he made 3 starts and appeared in all 13 games. He logged 25 tackles, 6 PBU, and 1 pick-6. He will look for an expanded role this upcoming season if he gets the starting nod.

S- Jaquan Johnson ... 5’11 190lbs Sr. At SS, Johnson is arguably the best player on the entire Miami defense and the undoubted Leader. He is known to be an instinctive player. Johnson is an elite talent that is a projected first rounder on many draft boards. In 2017, he started all 13 games and led the team with 96 tackles, 4 INT, 4 PBU, 3 Forced Fumbles, and 2 Fumble Recoveries. He has a knack for being around the ball. He earned 2nd team All-America this past season and is a preseason All-American for 2018.

S- Sheldrick Redwine ... 6’1 196lb Sr. Redwine is a CB converted S. He plays the FS position. In 2017, he started 12 games and posted 59 tackles, 6 PBU, and 2 INT. Miami returns both starting safeties.

**Names to know:
CB- Gilbert Frierson ... The Miami staff is supposedly really high on the freshman. They say he has really good length at 6’1 and think he will push for Bandy’s job.

S- Amari Carter ... The Sophomore is known to be one of the biggest hitters on the team. He logged 26 tackles and 2 Sacks as a freshman. Expect him to see a lot of PT in different packages. They like to use him as a blitzer.

Al Blades, Gurvan Hall, Robert Knowles, Jhavonte Dean, and D.J. Ivey are other notable DBs to watch for.

OVERALL GRADE: A
The Miami secondary has talent, experience, and lots of depth. I expect them to matchup well with our ultra talented WRs. It’s tough to say who will win the matchup, but it should make for a competitive game. Our WRs will have to create separation and Burrow will have to be sharp because they will play tight coverage all game long. As an offensive coordinator, it is hard not to notice Bandy’s height at 5’9. When you have the likes of Sullivan, Marshall, Davis, and Anderson all 6’4 and taller I would look to get a 1 on 1 matchup on the outside if the opportunity presents itself.

Hopefully this series of breakdowns shedd some light on what kind of defense we will be facing in week 1. The main takeaway I came away with is that this is probably one of the top defenses we will face all year long. That being said, if the offense doesn’t put up 40 points, it shouldn’t be the telltale sign of what kind of offense we truly have. I personally think LSU comes out with a W on opening day by putting up enough points to win. I think our defense is good enough to keep us in every game this year.

In 05 LSU would have attacked Bandy in the first series. Effectively.

from these write-ups, it looks like we'll be running the ball a good bit against Miami, especially to open up the passing. Our oline should be able to bully their dline.

Yep. His late father (Al Sr.) was an All-Big East LB at Miami and his cousin H.B. was a 3X All-Big East LB at Pitt. Both played in the NFL along with Uncles Brian and Benny who were Pro Bowlers.

The Miami DLINE is their weakest unit. I would not be surprised if we run the ball a little more than expected to wear down their front. If they can break them down with the run game, this will open up the pass game for Burrow.

Maybe the Weakest in terms of experience but the talent is there regardless.
We have 6 or 7 guys who have played a lot on the dline.
Joe Jackson junior projected first rounder 6’5 265.

Demetrius Jackson redshirt senior 3.5 sacks 7.5 tfls
-led the team in sacks and tfls before getting hurt In the 6th game.

Jonathan garvin 6’4.5 250 Sophomore
Elite talent on the edge and is the most natural pass rusher on the team.

Gerald Willis- 6’3 300 rs senior played in 2016 and practiced all season last year with the team

Patrick bethel 6’3 290 junior played a good amount as a 4th dt and has a strong spring

Jon ford 6’6 300 Sophomore, good young talent.

Scott patchan 6’6 255 and has a incredible get off. He’s been injured for most of his time at Miami but was healthy all last season(after he moved to tight end). This spring he moved back to end and had a great spring.

Now with the new guys we have added
I’m most excited about Nesta Silvera 6’2 305 freshman who was rated as the #2 dt in the country. Early word Is he’s been very impressive and has that dog in him.

Greg rousseau freshman 6’7 250, people are saying he may be the most talented guy on the dline and the roster which says a lot. He enrolled early as a true freshman but he was dominating spring practices and has put on a lot of weight. Freak athlete on the edge.

We also have a grad transfer dt coming in from Illinois to who has a lot of experience for depth purposes

Go check the “Miami DLINE” thread. I already listed all this information. I said the DL was y’all defense’s weakest unit. Compared to the linebacker corps and secondary, they are weaker. They may not be a weak unit, just weaker in comparison to the other 2 units.

Secondary and linebackers have more talent IMO.

Not saying they're not talented. Just have more talent in the other 2 groups.

I agree with your assessment on their DBs. They have a lot of talent and feel like they're being over looked because of how good their linebackers are.

From looking thru all these, my guess is LSU will look to run heavy out of the gate at that smallish defensive line. Miami has great linebackers and could load the box up fairly early. If this happens we should see a lot of one on one type matchups against this secondary and Burrow possibly having a big opportunity to show off his decision making and ability to break down defense first game. Should be a big test

Can’t believe I’m saying this but I’m a complete realist. Fake Tiger fans like to talk trash, a lot. Miami’s defense is better than our offense. I’m excited about Burrows too but if we think for a second he’s just going to come in and resurrect this offense we are delusional. Seriously, he transferred from Ohio for a damn reason- because he wasn’t going to play! Not sure if you watched JT Barrett last year but he sucked.
I hope we can win 8-9 games but would not be surprised at all if we won 6-7

Dude. I never said Burrow was going to do or not do anything. I said he probably has an opportunity to do those things. And that it will be a test. Jeez.
