They ran out of worthwhile backstory. Part of what I remember working so well early was the near perfect fit of the flashbacks and the present day story. Switching back and forth between 2 good, semi-connected stories kept it moving with little filler. Now that we've met all the characters and unraveled the mysteries it's become just another superhero show that's on a network aiming at the 25 and under crowd.

It's a combination of running out of ideas and focusing way too much on interpersonal drama.

What ever happened with the island story line? I remember he got off but that is all I can remember

The first season or two I’d hear the flashback sound effect and couldn’t wait to see it. Then at some point I started rolling my eyes at the sound effect. You’re right, the flashbacks were a big issue.
