One additional thing I find interesting at the midway point that I know you appreciate: what a lagging indicator most college football fans are.

Back in 2010 when realignment was heating up most message board fans didn't care. Then in 2011 they cared as it applied to them. Then after 2011 they spent years writing fanfiction about what COULD happen in realignment after it already DID happen.

Then in the last few years the interest died off when it was clear that realignment wasn't happening again for a while despite the fan fiction.

I see that happening again. Those who are actually plugged into this whole thing will be talking realignment in 2022 (before any media deals are up), while most fans will get engaged around 2025 (aka after the dominoes all fall).
