Like... a lot a lot. Specifically hanging. Specifically hanging himself the way he hanged himself. I guess where there's smoke...

19 references to hanging in 12 years

quote:

May 2005 Interview with 8 Days Magazine “If I had to make a show called The Naked Chef, I'd
hang myself.”

March 2012 Interview with Food Republic: “I'm not Michael Pollan. I'm not out there addressing
sustainable agriculture in this country in a serious way. A silent room for five minutes, I may as
well hang myself.”

May 2013 Parts Unknown, Season 1, Episode 4 (Quebec): “At no point in my cooking career
could I have worked with one of these (an electric stove) without murdering everyone in the
vicinity before hanging myself from the nearest beam.”

August 2005 No Reservations, Season 1, Episode 2 (Iceland - Hello Darkness My Old Friend):
“You wake up, feeling like you're not sure whether you want to curl up into a fetal ball, start
crying, projectile vomit, or hang yourself in the shower.”

November 2005 No Reservations, Season 1, Episode 9 (New Zealand): “Generally after these
events I want to hang myself in the shower stall, and tonight's no different.”

January 2009 No Reservations, Season 5, Episode 4 (Azores): “Oh boy, just saved from a
poisonous blowhole-inspired bout of depression and self-loathing by the healing powers of
pork. I determine not to hang myself in the shower stall of my lonely hotel room.”

July 2009 No Reservations, Season 5, Episode 13 (Rust Belt): “The painful story of my life and
less than distinguished career ended up as five episodes of a sitcom on Fox, at the end of which
I'd pretty much wanted to hang myself in the shower.”

January 2010 Milwaukee WI Riverside Theater appearance: “If I had to be him for five hours, I'd
hang myself in a shower stall.”

March 2015 Peabody Awards Interview: “I said 'No. I'm just not going to do it. I can't do it. You
know, I'll hang myself in the shower stall if I do that for a week'.”

Does this mean every male that has played a video game online is going to turn into a gay?

Pretty detailed, knew it was going to be in the shower.

If I spent a week in Mamou I would want to hang myself in the shower too.

Could mean something, but could also just be a person who uses a lot of hyperbole. I've said the same shite countless times as well, and there's definitely no suicidal thoughts here.

Some people are just more morbid and make light of more serious shite than others.

EDIT - That said, I think it is very clear Bourdain had some demons and this wasn't something he just woke up one day and felt out of nowhere. My point was more that those things matter a lot more to me than him using suicide in a sarcastic and hyperbolic manner. That on its own isn't necessarily alarming. Moreso that he said those things while also being known to struggle over the years.

sure. but if your "go to" smart arse quip is about hanging yourself in a hotel room shower and then you hang yourself in a hotel room shower, it comes off as a little sad.

not a pattern imo. 19 times in 12 years for what easily looks like just random talk

ive heard plenty of non suicidal people mentioning killing themselves in just random conversations

He was very open about his struggles with depression. His death was not really a shock.

For me, this type of repetitive subconscious thought or desire really does mean Skillet eats 5 men before noon at least 5 days a week.

But when someone actual does it their once random talk suddenly takes on a lot more meaning.

19 times in 12 years on camera

We have no idea how many times he said it in random conversation, but that’s a ton of times that he said it and it was documented

it's a couple of references a year over a 10 year period. It seems like a pattern now that he has killed himself, but it would be a pretty difficult "pattern" to detect in the normal course.

I anticipate his ex suing on behalf of his daughter, the network he worked for.
