he had two packs of pop tarts as his pre-race breakfast. I have to imagine a healthier choice may have been better for finishing the race strong. But what do I know

I’ve seen multiple people drink cokes at aid stations instead of gels or fruits. I think there’s a school of thought that takes the attitude that calories are calories and a gel isn’t any better than a coke. I’m not saying I agree with it

Finished in 2:13... pleased for not having run this year. I had battled shin splints in December. First one in the books! Super excited and feel accomplished.

I’m good with that during a race. I’d say that sugar is sugar no matter the source.

But this was about 2-3 hours before start time. He had 820 calories of refined sugar and hydrogenated oils and whatever other crap goes into pop tarts. Again, he’s the PhD and won the Vegas marathon recently, but it seems like an odd choice to me. Like asking to have a sugar crash or stomach cramps.

There is coke and red bull at aid stations for an ironman. It works. Glucose and caffeine. A lot of people will use flat coke so it doesnt bother your stomach.
