Great goal and I hope you achieve it!
My opinion probably differs from most maybe even all but I don't think they should have "pay to play" option. To me Boston is about putting in hard work to truly earn your entry. I think its ok to have a race that is not open to all, hence the lottery for all other races.
I've qualified 3 times and have never run it. once due to injury and twice now b/c they require covid vaccination. At some point they'll probably arbitrarily drop this requirement so maybe I'll get another chance.

They require Covid Vax? shite, now I kinda glad I am not running Eugene, with the chance to qualify. As I wouldn't have ran it anyway.

And totally agree with your stance on "pay to play". I'm firmly in the "not everyone gets a trophy" crowd.

Boston Marathon does not require COVID vaccination proof this year. The only thing I saw was that you have to wear masks on the bus while be transported to the starting area.

Regarding "Pay to Play", I see it from both sides. It is a remarkable feat to qualify for Boston under the minimum time limits. To distinguish those who qualify vs. those who are charity runners, I always followup with the statement that I am not fast enough to time qualify(yet) but instead am a charity runner. The charities really do benefit. I know the team I am running with (Red Cross of Massachusetts) has approximately 65 runners. Each has to fundraise a minimum of 10K or their credit card is charged this amount. That is 650K right there. This does not even include the entry fee for the Marathon which is around $300 more.
