"These days the public ... they are coming to listen to what you are playing and not just to look at you. ... I remember when I went to see the beatles it was to look at them. You didn't really bother what you were listening to. And today it's not what you are, it's what you're playing."
Truer words have never been spoken.

I'm not sure they needed to imply the Beatles were for "looking at" instead of their music. The competitive dig is not necessary. Of course the Beatles made great music, why say otherwise.

Unfortunately the Beatles became like Elvis, another big event. I don't think he was putting them down, just stating fact. While their music was solid, they gained damn near god like status in pop culture.
The end stage of every good band becomes this way.

IDK coulda sworn both were the case when it came to Zeppelin, people attended to listen to kick-arse rock music but also to look at Pagey with the long hair, double-neck SG, and dragon costume, Plant to see his chest and mane of long blond hair, Bonzo for his drum kit and wild antics and maybe sometimes Jonesy for his medieval haircut and exploits on the keys. Jonesy was so overlooked when it comes to Zep's legacy but probably was as vital to the band as Pagey was because of his ability to distinguish Zep's sound through the incorporation of unconventional instruments and proficiency thereof.

I don't think they're even in the same ballpark on that question.

I remember when the Beatles ripped off close to their entire catalogue from old dead blues guys and only gave them credit after they were forced to in court.
Oh no, wait never mind, that was Zeppelin.

Didn’t the Beatles become strictly a studio band for this exact reason?

quote:Exactly. Bonzo probably saw the Beatles when they were singing I Saw Her Standing There to teeny bopper. They never toured any of their "real" music.

yep
If you listen to something like 'Live at the BBC' you can hear their early rock-a-billy phase, when they were merely emulating popular music at that time, before mega stardom. Their personality's shine through and it's more easy to see their appeal both to teenage guys an gals, not just screaming prepubescent teeny boppers.

And?

And nothing. It's an asinine statement about a group he was jealous of.
He was in a band that the lead guitarist raked a violin bow across his guitar on stage.

Was it asinine, though, or completely true?

And what? There's nothing further.

That LZ made better songs than the Beatles, and that it isn't even a particularly close call, would be something further.

Is this his way of coming out of the closet?

LZ is one of my favorite bands but it's pretty well known they stole a lot of music.

He was also one of the most influential drummers of all time. He earned the right the right to knock on who he pleased, right or wrong. And I can promise you no one in the Beatles would have said a damned thing to him about it either.

Led Zeppelin = Milli Vanilli

I’m a huge LZ fan. They are my vote for GOAT. I don’t get this comment by him all those years ago. Bashing image? Did he ever look at his lead singer on stage? Open half shirt and blouses and pointing his cock at the front row continuously??
