The long play regarding SC Justices

Let's say Trump goes for a second term. That means he would almost certainly get another appointee when Justice Ginsburg either retires or passes. I just don't see her going much further.
But, in some possibility, the D party will eventually control both houses and an in kind presidency sometime after President Trump rides off back to Trump Tower. It's cyclical, and it will likely happen. The Ds would be faced with a young court with a strong majority of supposed conservatives.
What to do?
I'd look for a majority opposition party that controlled both houses of Congress along with a same party POTUS a vote to enlarge the SC, thusly diluting the potentcy of a conservative majority.
Sadly, there is nothing to stop it and I think they are well on their way of reaching that level of desperation.

Changing the rules to pack the court is a dangerous game.
Either shots will be fired or things will escalate the next time Republicans take over, expanding the judges on SCOTUS and all circuits to swamp out the lefty ones.
It is a short term win for the Dems with dangerous long term consequences.

I agree with you that it's dangerous and short sighted but with Senators asking others to sacrifice seats, that party is clearly gasping for air. More gut punches will bring a new level of desperation and they may just ring that bell.
...and they've changed rules before in order to advance their agenda...

Trump can EASILY get three in the next six years, Souter, Ginsburg and replacing Thomas . That’s a shift of two. And Sotomayor is 64 and a type one diabetic and struggles with that terrible disease, so that could plausibly be a third. Kagan is really the only one who looks to be going strong for another couple decades.

If the Democrats try to court pack again all hell will break loose.
We really need to pass an amendment locking it in at 9. It’s a dangerous weakness in the Constitution.

Agreed. Propose an amendment. If the Dems oppose it , what stops trump from packing the court?
