The Orioles want right-hander Corbin Burnes as the centerpiece in any Machado trade with the Milwaukee Brewers, and High A infielder Gavin Lux as the key prospect from the Los Angeles Dodgers, according to major-league sources.

Both teams are balking at including those players, sources say. The Brewers would prefer to build their package around Triple A outfielder Brett Phillips and Double A right-hander Luis Ortiz, according to one source. The Dodgers, unwilling to part with Lux or another Orioles target, High A right-hander Dustin May, are pursuing other veteran infielders, as first reported by Yahoo’s Jeff Passan, while remaining in the mix for Machado.

Sources told The Athletic on Sunday that the Brewers and Dodgers were the most serious suitors for Machado. The New York Yankees showed increased interest on Monday, and other teams also remain involved. It is in the Orioles’ interest to act sooner rather than later — Machado’s value as a rental diminishes with each day he remains in a Baltimore uniform.

The Yankees’ exact intentions in the Machado talks remain unclear. General manager Brian Cashman declined comment when asked about his interest on Monday, and did not answer specific questions about a possible trade from Joel Sherman of the New York Post on Tuesday. Cashman, however, told Sherman, “My job is to attack weakness” and said his biggest priority was upgrading the Yankees’ rotation.

I guess neither team wants to win this year. If you’re the Brewers I’d hope it’s because you’re holding Burnes to trade for an Ace. The whole farm should be available minus Keston.
The Dodgers crawfishing over May is silly. There’s tons of talent in the system to lose May for a chance to win instead of rolling the dice on an A ball pitching prospect.
