I'd spend a lot more time in the Park itself than the OP guy, but I guess it's a personal preference thing.
It was our first trip with two kids. We wanted to get as broad of an experience as possible, as well as, we didn't know how well the girls would like the park, since we are not really outdoorsy type people. As it turns out, with the exception of some complaining about the gnats, they did really well.
I don't think i would have given up any of our other days, but I wish we would have spent an additional day there, and that day would have been in the park. I would have liked to done Clingsman's Dome, as well as done some swimming holes (we passed a few). As well as the Cherokee area.
If we go back again we will likely spend two days at the park doing these things.

Its hard to pass all the stuff on the way in and say to the kids,"none of this fun looking stuff, we are headed to the park" It is just too flashy to hide from them

Only thign worth doing there is a tubing trip. It's a really depressing town. My kids hated it.
