I'm not comparing, I'm saying that's the modern origin of great players ring chasing.

As I posted above, both Payton and Malone were coming of 20 ppg seasons. Payton was an all star the previous year. They weren't washed up bench guys ring chasing.

Let’s clarify something: “ring chasing” used to be relegated to players past their primes trying to win a ring before hanging it up. That was mostly acceptable and expected. Malone and Payton did this (with Ray Allen and Garnett being on the cuffs of that as well)

When three 23 year olds construct contracts to stack the decks in their primes, there’s another level of connotation there that exceeds what we used to expect from “ring chasers”. They became betas.
