But isn’t that obvious? Is a dedicated saying needed? If you were trying to shoot a dollar bill over hundred yards away, wouldn’t you aim at what you were shooting for? Instead of just shooting in the general direction?
At that distance my sight pin covered roughly half the dollar bill. Letting the arrow go when I was on the dollar was not good enough. Since you can't hold a bow ( or gun) completely steady, you have to be patient enough to allow the sight to wander in it's small circle/figure 8 until it slowly settles towards the point of desired aim. In this case the tension on my trigger finger on my release did not tighten until the dot was settling with @ 1/4 of the dollar bill on either side of my dot. Not just ON the dollar bill, but centered on the dollar bill.
Thus aim small, miss small

Don’t aim at the soldiers. Aim at the button on their coat or something small. Or it could even mean, don’t aim at the group of soldiers, pick one to aim at.
Pretty good advice really.

Within the context of the movie, the boys are good, practiced shots. I don't think that mantra makes a lot of sense to them at that point.
It’s highly doubtful the boys ever fired at people before and their father knew they would be very nervous. He reminded them they still need to take their time and aim well, bullets don’t magically find their target.

It's kind of a fricked up scene when you think about how easily they do it.
It’s my favorite scene of the whole movie and I believe it might even have a tiny bit of realism to it. Yes they were only children, but this was a different time when children weren’t as sheltered as they are now. They knew what was going to happen to their brother and also what just happened to their other brother. This was a way to help him.

From American Sniper
“If you aim for a shirt button you might miss by 2 inches. You aim for a shirt you might miss by 2 feet.”

Also don't forget that slow is fast.
NO. Smooth is fast. Slow is just slow.
Perfect example, I was on an elevator with another guy. A really hot girl came running across the bank lobby and yelled "hold the door." Other guy stabbed at the Door Open button three or four times very fast missing each time. Meanwhile, on the other side of the door, I calmly reached out (quickly but not fast) and smoothly pushed the Door Open button on the first try. I beat him to it even though he had three times as many tries.
I didn't get the girl though...

Its actually some of the best shooting advice you can get. If you are trying to hit a person and you aim at a button on his shirt you may not hit the button but it will be a much more accurate shot then if you simply aim at the whole person. The smaller the target you aim at the more accurate you are.

If a sniper aims for the eyesocket and misses by an inch, it's still a head shot and likely a kill.

It's what coaches/teachers/fathers do. It's just a reminder, in a situation where it's importance can't be stressed enough.
