1) is it just the fan running or is it the compressor as well (likely just fan)

2) is the switch on the thermostat for fan set to "on" or "auto"

i had same issue a few years back. the control board went bad, replaced for a few hundred dollars

This is the problem. If it is “hundreds” then we will have spent about a grand over the past year. On an old unit. I feel I’m gonna do this and the coils are already leaking and the compressor will go.
