I would have agreed with that when I was 21 years old and taking music appreciation at LSU. I loved Beethoven's music as well.
However, as I've matured greatly and listened to reams of music both popular and "classical", I no longer consider these famous composers anywhere close to the greatest at their craft. I put on a couple of CDs of orchestral music last night by an unknown Norwegian composer named Johan Svendsen. I was absolutely amazed at the excellence and beauty of these works, especially his two symphonies. Whether or not they can be considered "greater" than works by the more famous artists is up for debate, but one thing is sure: I really like the Svendsen works better.
