I think he was elected due to a backlash to movements like black-lives matter and popularity of critical theory ideas pushed by the radical left. Also he ran against a very unlikable, status quo neoliberal candidate.
I think his approval rating is low due to negative press coverage coupled with the stark difference between truth and his statements. His lack of professionalism and his Michael Scott ie incompetent method of management also doesn't help.

Really you aren't very up to date on history. Under Obama's tenure as POTUS the democrats lost over 1000 seats in Congress, governorships and state legislator positions. And you say Republicans are dying for a win??
