For the record, I always tip 20 or higher out of sheer laziness, even for bad service

Be sure to tip the pre-tax amount.
I'm pretty good about tipping. After working in the food service industry, I always tip 20% on food purchases. Booze, different story. Not leaving a 20% tip for opening a beer.
