Eric Clapton was asked once "What does it feel like to be considered the best guitarist in the world?" His answer was "You need to ask Prince."

No, he didn’t. Urban myth. Google is your friend.

Was Prince a great musician and performer? Yeah.

Was Prince a great guitarist? No.

Heres what Clapton said about Prince when he died, which would have been an appropriate and proper place to have said something about his ability with a guitar, but he didn’t:

Meh. I think the work speaks for itself - Prince was a virtuoso on keys and guitar. While his greatest legacy is probably just the sheer volume of music created (much of it remains unreleased) and a good bit of it is bubblegum synth pop/rock/funk/R&B (the Minneapolis sound he introduced to a wider audience), it doesn't detract from his skills on that most rock of all instrument - the six-string electric guitar.

Was Prince the greatest guitarist ever? I don't think so. But, as much of this is subjective, that shouldn't preclude him from being great.

Hell, as a rock guitarist, Clapton himself is overrated (although he is certainly one of the best blues guitarists, regardless of color and a great rock guitarist, despite being overrated).

So I suppose Stevie Gaines was a better guitarist than Prince? This shite is about to get good.
