the Zionist invasion, ie the Jews legally purchasing land from the ottoman owners

Um the Ottoman Empire was dissolved in 1918.

In between was this thing called the British Mandate.

Israel was created in 1947.

um the majority of the Jews that migrated back to the area as part of the Zionist movement did so during the late ottoman period, and then again immediate following WWII there was an increase. They started migrating from Europe in an organized fashion as early as the 1850s (actually there were several much earlier attempts that never really too off), and yes they legally purchased every but if land acquired up until the war in 1948, and most of it was from absentee ottoman land owners. A great deal of the land they were purchasing at the time was unimproved desert, which they since made bloom. The British put extremely strict immigration restrictions on Jews returning to Palestine between the wars. It helped contribute to the Holocaust death toll because millions of Jews who would otherwise have fled the German sphere of influence to palestine between the wars were prevented from doing so. The British had a hard on for the Arabs because they helped against the ottomans during WWII (Lawrence of Arabia). They also just unilaterally gave away 80% of the territory of Palestine to Abdullah son of Sharif Hussein (the guy who started the Arab revolt), when the hashemites lost power in what is now saudia Arabia. They gave Iraq to another of his sons.
