It caught me off guard how much he spent on jewelry. Even though I “know a guy” in the jewelry business that gave me a great price on my wife’s engagement ring (which of course appraised for twice as much as I bought it for), I realized that I would probably only get 50% if purchase price in the open market (for an engagement diamond—gold is more predictable).

He probably made money at walk-ons, since it was a semi-startup at the time of investment, but any money invested into Jimmy Johns franchises would have probably been better off in a vanguard s+p 500 fund.
