I don't get Jake Slaughter leaving

What am I missing?
He's an 18th round pick as a sophomore. He could be a 5 tool player if he develops his contact more. He already has the power, speed, glove, and arm. He could definitely be an early round pick next year with another year of improvement.
With the returners and newcomers that we have coming, we could have a special team. His departure leaves quite a hole for us at third base. I just don't understand how him leaving benefits him or the team.

What speed? Was not a base stealer threat.
There was also the chance Smith could move to 3rd and keep Hughes at SS and also incoming players could send him to the bench.

We are not losing much production. He didn’t provide much of anything this year. He was playing on potential, not actual results

IMO he was told to leave, may not have a starting spot

He may have trouble getting on the field next year so it's best that he goes.

I wish the best for him. Sucks that he will be most remembered for that dumb slide into second base in the CWS finals last year.

Hard to improve your draft stock if you are on the bench

And actually, I just saw this:
Mainieri advised all 4 current players drafted to sign

LSU will likely lose just four current players to the professional ranks: pitchers Nick Bush and Cam Sanders, infielder Jake Slaughter and catcher Hunter Feduccia. Mainieri said he advised all four players to sign after they were drafted.

Yup, PM told him to sign. After all we all know it was everyone else’s fault that Jake only batted .250 here!
His dad did threaten to pull him out and put him at Tech playing football

Slaughter has some raw talent that was not get any better at LSU. He will get a chance to get better in minor/rookie league ball.
He was not going to play much next year with Smith and some incoming freshman coming in.

Definitely persuaded to leave due to Josh Smith coming back and incoming freshmen

I don't understand how he wouldn't have a starting position next year. Josh Smith is the only infielder better-- and that's assuming he's back to 100%. Slaughter is definitely better than Hughes, Broussard, or Reid. And I don't see where any of the incoming freshmen infielders are that highly ranked.
Even as a .255 career hitter, he did produce a .350 OBP and slugged .432 this season. And he was an above average third baseman. Yes, he did a lot of dumb stuff. But that doesn't make him not the best option from a baseball perspective. You have to weigh the good with the bad.
Can someone tell me who will be starting at the 3 infield positions who are better than Slaughter? I assume it's Josh Smith and 2 freshmen.

He wouldnt be promised one is the point. Smith is definitely starting, we all know that. Slaughter on the other hand definitely could be beaten out by any of the incoming players.
I'm sure that's what Mainieri was telling him when he said he advised him to take the money now.

He was most likely told to sign because he was occupying a large sum of scholarship money. Getting the roster to 35 is only one part of the equation. Allocating the 11.25 scholarships is another, less talked about part. I have no inside information, but I would assume that giving all these highly touted players the amount of scholarship they were promised will be more difficult than getting to 35. Slaughter (who may or may not have started) being gone helps that.
For the incoming class, Dugas and Bianco are both highly thought of. Also, if the real Broussard was the guy before he was injured, he probably will stick at 2nd base. In the unlikely even that Turang makes it to campus, he absolutely starts.

If Slaughter doesn't think he can beat out Hughes, Broussard, Reid, and some freshmen who aren't even as highly ranked as he was coming out of high school himself then he must have some terribly low self-confidence.

Whoa! I thought he could be better than he showed, but let’s not get crazy.
