I understand your skepticism, but we as tax payers pay 2x as much per person in the US for equal health care outcomes as are seen in Germany, France, and the UK
How much does it cost to have a baby in the UK?
If you've had a kid, did you take a look at the actual bill? I'm sorry, but delivering a baby, and my wife and kid staying at the hospital for 3 days total, shoud'nt cost $30k, even though i only paid $150 with my insurance. WHy are they charging you $50 for 2 Tylenol?
Seriously, how much does it cost the UK gov't to deliver a baby? From what i've read, it's around $3-9K depending on what's going on. That isn't possible in the US. Insurance and the citizen will likely pay near $30k. WHy are they delivering babies for $20k less in the UK?
The problem with our healthcare is no one gives a shite how much going to the doctor costs, b/c none of us actually pay what they are charging. Here's my $20 copay and the insurance pays the other $500.
The idiots that do the charges at these doctors offices frick shite up constantly, but it doesn't matter b/c your insurance company pays them whatever they say.
If people had to actual pay for going to the doctor when they have a cold, and had to fork over $400 for a 2 minute visit just to get a shot or some medicine, they'd suck it up and just go get some Mucinex instead.

You were on a roll until this. A doctor's "charge" means shite to a payer. There are contracted rates much less than the "charge". And getting them to even pay the contracted rates is an administrative challenge in itself. There is an entire industry whose sole purpose is working denials for physician offices. Payers use every technicality they can to NOT pay the doctor. Referrals, PA's, incorrect demographics, timely filing, etc....

I don't think the people with insurance and copays are the ones driving up healthcare costs. It's the people on Medicaid that do this, because they don't have to pay anything. There is no accountability for incurring a huge hospital bill, because if you don't have credit to begin with, your credit can't be ruined.
