For a road trip it's hard to beat the southwest.

Besides Grand Canyon, what is there? Or are you including the Utah national parks as well? Or are you referring to the southwest being a relatively easy, flat and straight drive?

The pacific coast, northern Atlantic coast, and Yellowstone/Utah park system are far more scenic than the southwest.

Early October. Trust me you don't want to go if it's cold, and while it's rare, it can happen.

I just scheduled MSY to SFO for mid July. Direct flights on Alaska and we leave Thursday night and get back Monday afternoon. 1 day in San Francisco and 2 in Napa. Pretty much have it all planned out now

Niagara Falls is a day trip while on business in Buffalo, not a basis for a family vacation, in my humble opinion.

There is some touristy vacation kids stuff in that area on the Canada side. All the Ripley's crap and other game type stuff to do. Can also do some rafting down the river.

I woudln't take the kids there though. Wife and i went on a 3 day trip up there. Flew into Buffalo and drove to Toronto. Toronto is an awesome city. Also, there's vineyards the entire way from Toronto to Niagara.

A Niagara/Toronto extended weekend trip is a nice couples getaway.
