I normally have nerves of steel, but when that fricker started spinning away from the boat, and the boat kept going the wrong way, I was sweating it a little bit

Is it normal that only one line is tied to the barge (if tug is on the side)? Since then, I thought that was dumb as shite, but maybe pilots use it to pivot the barges through tight spots.


Eta: The guy was a budget pilot that had been fired from his company.

Our conversation before his dump was literally, "I gotta shite. You know how to drive this?". I told him I guess I could figure it out, but I have no idea right now. Then, he said, "This is the rudder. This is the throttle. Don't wreck it". Told me nothing about the boat having two rudders

Why wouldn't he just bring the bucket into the wheelhouse and shite'n'steer?
