Regardless of how you feel, I don’t see how this makes money sense for a studio? Why finance this? Where has this succeeded?

Why can't they just start w/the 1940s Watchmen? 
They'd be able to touch on LGBTQ issues, misogyny, and racism w/that and it would be something that could stay close enough to the source material w/o forcing complete retelling of the story in the movie.
