Superficially everyone is closer.

But in reality everyone is farther apart.

You feel simultaneously close to everyone but there's no real closeness.

It causes issues.

Breesus is wise but I say the technology is overall very bad for society as a whole. Video games keep young people indoors vs out doors playing. Facebook is mining your data and has become the sounding board for idiotic political sermons; don’t we all know many people who are 100% addicted to FB? Twitter is an absolute trash heap of idiotic opinions from self important morons. And oh yeah, we all stare at our phones too much...including me.

It's en vogue to parrot this but I don't buy it. I think it's largely nonsense. It's something usually said by people 35+ years old. You still have friends you communicate with and meet up with and then there are other "friends" you have only superficial connections to. Now those connections can be maintained via interwebs.

People are as close as they want to be, with face to face interaction, texting, facebook, etc. Some people substitute face-to-face interaction for virtual interaction because they're more comfortable doing so, but these are the types of people who would otherwise not be interacting with anyone.
