I put the series up there with Band of Brothers as my favorite series/movie/television productions of all time, so I might be a bit biased, but I'd say check out the series first. First rate acting all around.
I did the series first and then read the book and enjoyed both.

Why not both? Why choose between greatness? Cut out some other shite you watch that sucks like late night tv or SNL.
