If it's a double sink you need to block one side with a rag while you plunge the opposite or you won't clear the clog.

depends where the clog is...my clog was at the garbage disposal (egg shells were the culprit)...plunging cleared it easily and I no longer put egg shells in the garbage disposal.

And if it is a bathroom sink that has the little over flow hole near the lip you got to cover that as well or the air just bypasses the clog.
