The very short version.
The FBI spy meets with George Popadopolis.
Spy: Hey, George, did you know that the Russians have a ton of incriminating emails from Hillary?
George: Ooooooh, Really?
Spy: Yep.
George: Cool.
Later..
George is drunk and talking to another guy about the campaign.
George: Hey, did you know the Russians have a bunch of stuff on Hillary?
Guy: Really?
That conversation = 'Trump campaign advisor reveals that Russians have stuff on Hillary. This calls for an investigation!!!"

Yeah, I play 3 days a week now. Health is good. Game is getting better as I stopped trying to make my clubs do what I want them to do. I know choose the club based on what it does naturally.

Second one met him for something and mentioned it, then sent the Aussie diplomat his way.

He said he would not name the spy but that the name would not ring a bell. The plot was to use Carter Page to open an investigation. When that didn't work they went to George Pap since he was young and unimportant so he would be likely to say 'Ooooh, guess what I know' to someone.
