Cities along southeastern seaboard from Savannah to Richmond with the exception of Atlanta and Hampton Roads.
Charleston, Charlotte, Raleigh, Richmond, Savannah. All seem to be pleasant places in general.

You left out Greenville, SC. All of the amenities of a large city in a smaller package. Mountains, golf, lakes, short drive to the beach, walkable downtown, breweries, etc. Also, it's close enough to Atlanta and Charlotte for a day trip without having to live in the larger city.
