Mountain Brook outside of Birmingham, AL, is extremely underrated. It's gorgeous.

What I like about that location is that you're 4 hours from Gulf Shores, 5 from New Orleans, 2 from Atlanta, 3 from Nashville, 3.5 from the Smoky Mountains. It's a great central location to start a road trip.

It's the only place I'll go if we decide to move closer to my wife's family. It's just hard to find a house that doesn't need 40 years of upgrades.

It may be underrated to people from outside the area, but it's pretty highly rated among us AL folks. Definitely considered one of the best areas in the state imo.

Madison, AL seems to be a better kept secret to me. Further north so add a couple hours to the beach trips. But closer to the places like Chattanooga and Nashville. Just outside of Huntsville, which I read was one of the fastest growing economies in the country. It's not as big as Bham, but less trashy imo.

It's probably the nicest suburb in the South.
