Life’s about choices. He’s really interested, he pays his way and risks the $800 he will spend in travel. If not, he doesn’t. No ones holding a gun to his head. My point is, they are probably weeding out people that they think aren’t serious about the position and just want a free trip to NYC. Which by the OPs original post, he’s not really that interested in the job. This is exactly the last person I’d want to spend money on flying up for an interview.

BTW, now that we know he’s a pot head and won’t pass the drug screening, he should save his money.

Then my response is to weed out companies that aren't serious about hiring good people. It's a two way street where the company has to sell themselves to me.
