Honestly, they are probably trying to gauge your real level of interest. Maybe they sensed you may not be that serious about moving there. I could see lots of people going to NYC for an interview doubtful they really want the job (like you) but think screw it, Its a free trip to NYC, why not. Then employer has to pay for a bunch of non-serious mo-fos free trip to NY. If you are serious about the job, pay for the trip. If they make you an offer negotiate on relocation(run if they won’t pay your relocation). You can also make yourself whole on trip costs in negotiations on salary, sign on bonus, etc.

Oh frick you, you piece of shite. He’s 4 years out of college, and just because you’re petty as shite, you’re going to force some people to fly out on their dime instead of a Skype interview just to determine if he’s serious? What if they all fly out for the interview?

“Hey thanks you stupid assholes for being dumb enough to spend a combined 8K to fly out and interview for this company that is worth billions. In the meantime out of our 7 candidates who flew out, we decided to hire a NYC based rep due to his connections in the local area. I know most of you could barely afford it, but take solace in knowing we wouldn’t have helped you with your moving expenses.”

Seriously, frick you if you would do that to someone who doesn’t have much cash and you work for a multi million dollar firm.
