Depends.
If you have checked baggage and a seat assignment, getting on late makes sense because you don’t need space in the overhead bin and your seat is reserved. If you have carry on baggage (like I always do) then getting on early makes sense to ensure that you can put your baggage right above you.
Obviously (as you mentioned) getting on early for a SW flight is good no matter what.

You get on early so you can get overhead storage. But more importantly so you can recline with your complimentary tarmac vodka tonic and high brow the mouth breathers in coach as they scurry past.
