Never understood the need to get on first (except southwest air). I prefer to get on last. They arrive to parties 30 min early too?

Same. Nothing like waiting on the airplane for 45 minutes.

This. I got burned last time on a plane (first time on Southwest). I was chilling at the gate watching netflix and laughing at the idiots rushing up to stand in line. I got on at last call and got the remaining 2/3 of a middle seat next to andre the giant's overflowing arse cheeks.

Depends.

If you have checked baggage and a seat assignment, getting on late makes sense because you don’t need space in the overhead bin and your seat is reserved. If you have carry on baggage (like I always do) then getting on early makes sense to ensure that you can put your baggage right above you.

Obviously (as you mentioned) getting on early for a SW flight is good no matter what.
