I was just coming here to make a thread on this article.
It may be very short sided on my part but I don't really care if Syria becomes an Iranian/Russian sub-state. It already was to some degree.
I am sorry that we couldn't aid the people of that area in becoming free. However, I don't think that was ever a possibility anyway. As we have seen over and over, culturally that region is largely incompatible with democratic values.
The truth is Russia and Iran are bad actors/authoritarian regimes, and because of that they have the ability to get their hands dirty. They can do the things that we simply cannot do (openly) while staying in line with the values that we proclaim as a nation. All of that is to say, they can wholesale kill large swaths of the population, which is only path to victory that I can see in most Middle East conflicts.
Iran, Syria and Russia all have massive sanctions against them. Hopefully we will reinstate the sanctions against Iran to their previous levels. They are all struggling economies.
Let them commit their limited resources to continuing this engagement for the next decade. If they are successful, the worst case is that they will have completed a genocide against the Sunni population in the area, completely eliminating the ISIS base.
I cannot make a good case that Syria would be much better off if Assad were overthrown and some type of new Sunni back Muslim brotherhood took over.
It's disgusting and I feel somewhat ashamed to write this, but I would rather see all of this happen then for us to commit more American lives and money to this situation.
