I thought firefighters make more than 50k and have dank benefits
I thought if you get hired on you are set. I think there is a reason NO Fire sometimes goes years without hiring anyone ... no one leaves.

Base pay in South Louisiana - no way starting out. Firefighters usually have contract work with another fire department or two and also have a side job.
I'm not knighting, I just know the salary isn't great. The nature of the shifts allows flexibility to do other things. I know plenty of firefighters who have an HVAC or construction business on the side. The benefits are probably above average.
