Lost an acquaintance to suicide

An acquaintance of mine took his life this week. He was a guy who seemingly had the world at his fingertips: good family, friends, a good job, he was active in the community. He wasn't even 30. My friends and I, while we didn't know him well, are struggling to understand if we could have helped. There were no signs that we could see. Looking back, he always seemed so happy and was always surrounded by tons of people. I guess it goes to show you that you never really know what people are struggling with inside.
To anyone on the board who is struggling with depression, or who is having thoughts of hurting yourself, please, please reach out to someone. You're never beyond the help of family or friends, and your life is precious, and you are loved.
Today would be a great day to tell those in your life you love them, to reach out to someone you haven't spoken to in a while, or to give a stranger a nice gesture. You never know the impact it could have.

Sorry for your loss. My wife lost a cousin to suicide almost a year ago, and it's been very hard on everyone.
Absolutely all of this.

Was this the guy at the Opera House?
Aquaintence of someone who dated him. Apparently truly surprising. Sorry for your loss.

Look, no offense (I don't know you so I'm not presuming to understand your situation), but I get really tired of seeing this shite from people who haven't ever experienced depression or suicidal thoughts. It's not just that easy. Sometimes you talk to people and they don't care or don't take you seriously.
That said, sorry for your loss.

So do nothing is the better answer? Why does every suicide thread need at least one of your types in here?

Yes. Very sad and very surprising.

Doesn't mean it shouldn't be said. If it takes once out of 100x for it to motivate someone it is worth it.

OP never said it was easy.
Most people don't.
OP, and most people, are just pleading for those with issues to be honestly and truly brave and take the step to let someone know and/or get help. Not everyone is going to take a depressed person seriously, or be mentally equipped to believe the severity of the situation, but some will. And some will help those people get out of the hole of depression.
The risk is a depressed person dealing with the same old crap, but the potential benefit is so much more.

I'm in several veterans groups on FB. I've seen many instances of someone in one of those groups going through rough times and contemplating suicide. Every single time people post their phone numbers, offer to meet up to talk to them, and take a genuine interest in helping.
Maybe you need to find better people to surround yourself with...

I don't struggle with depression, but I just can't help but think someone could have possibly given him a ray of hope that could have saved him from this.
I've a friend who attempted to take his life a few years ago. Thankfully he's better now, but we've spoken about it some, and he said as soon as he tried, he immediately regretted it and wanted to live. I thank God everyday he made it.
I don't fully understand depression or what would cause someone to want to hurt himself, but I understand that life is precious, and sometimes even a small gesture of kindness or compassion could save a life.

Yeah it’s tough, a man who I used to attend a Bible Study group with committed suicide last week. You never know what someone is dealing with mentally.

I've seen it first hand. A person can be in it so deep that they convince themselves that nobody cares if they are dead. Sometimes just showing someone that you give a frick is enough.

Yes, it's a touchy situation. Best thing to do, is to get the person professional help asap.

I try to treat acquaintances and coworkers like this every day. You most likely never know what people are going through

I am sorry you are going through this, I have gone through the same as one of my best friends has killed himself. It is very common for those friends and family to wonder what they could have done or if they had just reached out. Unfortunately, friends and family are not included in this, in my friend's case, there was apparent and growing psychosis and impossible to really know what was going on in his head, for all we know he was saving everyone and the world by committing suicide.
