Was the Commodore 64 the GOAT gaming system?

Better graphics than the competition during that time and a good variety of titles.

Isn’t even the best gaming system with 64 in its name.

Nothing beat the actual fun of Nintendo. Snes is tough to beat.

He said during the time...
However, during the time, there wasn't much competition.
Bards Tale III was a beast. Breaking out the graph paper to try and keep track of where the hell you were.
But it didn't matter because you stepped on a darkness spell and a spin zone so you lost your place in the darkness. Good times.

SNES is one of the GOAT. The library was unprecedented.

I had that Apache Gunship game on the 64, I remember when I opened the box and saw the keyboard overlay that had all of your controls on it, I was amazed.
Also, wasted a whole summer playing Sid Meier's Pirates.
This was also back when Service Merchandise was around and sold games.
Then my buddy got a Tandy, and we lost a lot of time playing King's Quest and Space Quest.

quote:I had an Atari 800 at this time and had a buddy with a C64. I really don't think the graphics were that much different between the 2 systems but maybe that's becuase they were so crude you had to use a good bit of your imagination anyway.

Based on my limited understanding, the C64 could display graphics at a higher resolution and could display 2 colors per a sprite but had a fairly limited overall color palette. The Atari 800 had a much wider color palette and a faster CPU.
I'm sure the C64 had a wider catalog since it lasted longer (due to Atari releasing the ill-fated 5200) but I never noticed it as a kid. I was able to play the "big releases" I wanted to at the time on my Atari 800: Archon, Archon 2, MULE, the Zork's, Spy vs Spy 1 - 3, Beach Head, Zorro, Karateka, etc. Also, I was like 5 or 6 at the time and was largely just playing what my older brother was into.
Having said all of that, I think the SNES and PS2 are clear contenders for greatest systems of all time. Tons of must-have titles on both and developers really seemed to be exploring new gameplay ideas during both of those eras.

Something I always heard about but never touched, so I could never tell if it was this piece of gaming history that I unfortunately missed out on, or just overhyped nostalgia because it was one of those old things.

I went Atari 800 > 800XL > Amiga 500. Fun times!
Exodus Ultima III, Faery Tale Adventure. Can't remember any of the others at the moment.

Genesis or PS1 is the GOAT console with PS1 edging it out only because the CD format gave far better audio and cut scene capabilities.

Have to upvote here...
Some of my favorite titles were on PS1 - Resident Evil, Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, Final Fantasy 7, Twisted Metal, Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat.
