I assume playing the games helps, especially in understanding the nature of the monsters (though the janitor and those nurse creatures were pretty self-explanatory.) I never played them myself, so I have no clue about some of the monsters. The plot itself is laid out pretty well in the movie. Town run by some apocalyptic witch-hunting cult finds out that one of the children (seemingly fatherless, iirc) has psychic and/or magic powers. They burn her alive as a witch, but she's too powerful to actually kill. Instead, in immense pain, she lashes out with her psychic/magical powers, creating an alternate-world hellscape out of the entire town, with the only refuge being in the church. She sends out the last part of her that isn't filled with rage and pain in the form of Sharon (apparently she has the power to do such things) Sharon is adopted but still has a subconscious connection to Alyssa and Silent Hill yadda yadda (I assume how they got there isn't confusing.) Since it's an alternate world, Sean Bean and the cop, who are in the 'real' world, never encounter the inhabitants of the alternate world, including (now) his wife and adopted daughter. And so on. Alessa slaughters everyone except Sharon(who now seems to be Alessa as well), the mom, and her own mom. Then, even when they leave Silent Hill, they still don't leave the alternate world.
Yeah, writing that all out, from 3-4 year old memory no less, I can see how it might get confusing.
Edited to fix spelling of Alessa.

To add to that, they never get out of the alternate world because Sharon opened her eyes at the ends and saw Alessa if I recall correctly. Her mother tells her not to look but she does anyway. I think that has something to do with it.
But yeah, very strange to people who have no prior knowledge of it lol

And then after they burned an innocent girl she had so much rage she attracted a demon to actually come and possess her then. At least that's what I took from it. How the alternate dimension was created and why the mother and daughter went into it along with the cop but the other cop and dad couldn't l, or how the other cop hasn't aged in 30 years were all questions that seemed to never be answered

Playing Silent Hill 2 on PS2 was terrifying as a kid. Didn't see the movie.
ETA- I just looked up the release date, and apparently I was a senior in high school. It still scared the shite out of me. Not ashamed.

Now that I recall that exact moment, that makes sense. Sort of like a callback to classic stories like Eurydice and Lot's wife being told not to look back but doing so anyway and damning themselves.

Okay, I must be misremembering the flashback scene. For some reason, I thought that the scene where all the children are taunting Alessa had them chanting 'witch' at her.
I'm going to rewatch the movie soon, since I clearly haven't remembered it perfectly. I'm pretty sure the cop was aged a little, just gracefully. Like Doc Brown in BttF. I remember thinking the same thing and watching carefully for signs of aging.

Her rage summoned a demon when she was in the hospital and she accepted the offer of vengeance.

Okay. Is this something that would be more obvious if one has played the games? I always assumed that she had the power all along but it was only awoken and twisted toward evil by the traumas she experienced ( raped by the janitor and burned alive) I interpreted the demon as a dissociate sort of thing resulting from her experiences. I think one of the reasons I thought this was because, in spite of her clearly evil acts, she spared both her biological and adoptive mothers, which left me thinking that she was still capable of humanity even through her rage and revenge.
I'll probably rewatch tonight. We've been doing "Carnivale" but we can take a night off from that

Yeah you should watch the sequel it shows the cult a little more but kinda creates some plotholes from the first one but it's good. I think the cult us evil, and probably the demon but to a lesser extent than the townspeople and the child is still innocent. In a way all of the evil that happens mainly only affects those who deserve it from what I can tell. There's only 1 or 2 innocents the are ever attacked by the demon or the creatures created by the demon.

The original game was amazing. So dark and tense and terrifying. We actually would play it in the dark and would jump at some of the action. The movie was meh. Ok, but nothing great.

Oddly enough, you’re probably right.

I still think the 1st Resident Evil is the best.
