This is the overriding theme with most Ken Burns' docs.
He hates the South and he hss never been afraid to let it be known. He pushes the white guilt thing irl every time he gets a chance and hell, even when he was recently on Finebaum promoting one of his latest works he took the opportunity to take a shot at the South and blammed Trump on us ... which I took as a compliment.
Burns is an OT, not OG mind you, but OT as in Original Transitionor or Original Transvestite. Incredibly talented but unbelievably and incredibly well funded mostly by tax payers.
Given that fact I have always said he could have done better. After Civil War all of his docs have had political overtones strongly in favor of his openly socialist and communist beliefs.

Well if he does, he picked the wrong guy in Shelby Foote to be his source material for the Civil War doc.
It's no secret Foote is from Mississippi and says his shaping as a youth was during Jim Crow...and it's no secret that critics have claimed his 3 Volume Narrative on the Civil War is heavily Pro-Southern.
IDK how much his upbringing influenced his writing...I don't really care...
Because it's the best writing on the Civil War ever.
Which is why Ken Burns used it and him extensively. There are a million other books and historians out there who have covered the Civil War till kingdom come...
But Burns chose Shelby Foote - a supposed Southern sympathizer.
So if your premise is correct, Burns is an idiot. Picking a Pro-Southern Lost Cause Advocate for his series.

Well Shelby covered the more military oriented stuff in the documentary. The nuts and bolts of the battles, strategy, etc
Also talked a lot about the generals involved
He rarely ventured into the bigger picture slavery stuff. Those interviews were left to other people
To be fair

I don't think there were many other children of slaves alive at the time Ken Burns made this documentary.
I get it, but he goes back to her repeatedly for the poetry recitals. It gets old quick.
you could probably take some ritalin for that ... heroin if the ritalin doesn't work ... how does listening to the child of a slave get 'old quick'?

Do ANY of y’all know about “ The Brooklyn Bridge”, which is undoubtedly his best?

I'm aware of it and I've seen it on Amazon Prime, but I haven't watched it
I watched his son's one on NYC and got tired of it pretty quickly, although the stuff in the 1700-1800s was good. The Burns' love them some New York City, they seem to make just about every doc regardless of subject about NYC in some way or another
But I will give this one a shot, I need something to watch tonight

Civil War is fantastic. Only difficult part is convincing someone else to watch the damn near 20 hours of it

In the middle of his WWII series right now. I might have to rewatch it again as soon as I'm finished. Really good.

My top 3 in no order would be Civil War, Dust Bowl and Jazz. Anything he does is solid.

It's interesting to see how he recycles stuff from series to series. If you watch The Roosevelts and then The War, you'll hear the same stats and side notes mentioned.

btw, not Ken Burns...but if you liked the National Parks documentary and or just nature...
You have to watch the BBC Yellowstone in HD. The cinematography is amazing.
Youtube has a standard definition...

Apart from Ken Burns, BBC makes the best docs.

I think that's ok tho. I mean it's all american history. There's bound to be some overlap. I do love the scores for his docs too. I know Civil war is basically just Dixie, Marching through Georgia, and Battle Hymn of the Republic over and over but the way they mix it up with the instruments and the tempos keeps it fresh to me the entire time. Plus I just love Civil War era music. It's all very distinctly American.

I think that he learned his lesson after the Civil War. Not sure if he planned on people binge watching the series, but, if you do, you're going to hear that damn violin theme to the point of nausea.
