Any advice on the best product or method to coat a new cedar fence? We just cut down a big tree that straddled my property line with the neighbors and I would like to keep that new fence look for as long as possible.

The fence guy didn't speak highly of Thompson's water seal, I'm looking for ideas on other products or experience on preserving an outdoor fence. Your best advice on how to apply it is appreciated too.

The fence is about 65' long and about 7' high of standard 6' cedar fence pickets, over horizontal 2x12 pressure treated mudboards buried slightly in the ground.

I was really looking forward to the responses on this thread. Does anyone have some suggestions?

Always heard Sikkens was the best, but you pay for it at the register....also heard Thompson is hot garbage.

Thompsons is shite and has been since it was reformulated, the Behr is much better and can be applied with a pump up sprayer, go with a red cedar tint and it will stay that way for years.

Thompson starts to wear off soon after it is applied. I tried it on a concrete driveway, a pressed pebble driveway, brick driveway walls and a wooden deck. I ended up disappointed afterwards.

2 gallons burnt motor oil
5 gallons diesel
Pint of red and Pint of brown oil based paint.

Filter oil and spray with a wand. Looks great, will last a long time.

Cedarshield, followed by a good oil based stain like Benjamin Moore arborcoat

Thanks for the advice on products.

Any advice on applying? Cedar shield I'd apply with a garden sprayer, should I apply the stain with a paint sprayer?

This recipe looks like a lot to whip up in my backyard. Anywhere I can buy something like this pre-mixed or have it put together?
