Here’s an unintended consequence: the SUV.

Americans like big automobiles. Feds put unreasonable mileage standards on cars. Large family station wagons become unavailable so Chrysler introduces the mini-van. The mini-van is based on a truck chassis and not subject to car standards.

Once the way around the moronic law becomes clear, the SUV (trucks) takes the place of all the legislated extinct big cars. SUV sales have increased every year. In 2016 SUV sales were 63% of all new car sales!
