If you want a reliable sedan, buy a Lexus. If you want the best driving sedan, buy a BMW (it's the benchmark by which all others are judged).
This opinion is outdated. The IS350 F Sport beat out the BMW 340 in a recent comparison for example. A lot of reviews of new BMWs say they've gotten away from what made them great.

I think you should consider the Genesis series by Hyundai. The new G70 comes out this April/May.

Who ran the test on the new 340?

A few years back the Lexus ES 300 and the Toyota Camry shared the same chassis… they were very similar in design. That is hardly the case today.
Now the ES shares a chassis with the Avalon.

That V90 is a tank. The new v60 looks pretty good as well. It was just released on a media day not to long ago. Will start selling in 2019, it will be all electric I believe.
The wife liked the V90, I didn’t like the price.

I wish sports station wagons & hatchbacks were more of a thing here. Granted, I understand why they are not. But still...

Touché… did not do my research. I will say that over all Toyota and Lexus are a completely different class vehicle. I have owned both. Design, fit and finish, attention to detail, Performance… All aspects lean heavily towards the Lexus brand. After quickly reading a few articles comparing the two brands about the only thing the Toyota has over Lexus is price and fuel economy.

I own an Infinity, Mercedes, and Lexus. The Infinity and Lexus have had zero problems in 30k miles. But, I love the sound of the Mercedes engine

An S5 is not aggressive enough for you? What do you normally drive?

All these Volvos are the same vehicle basically, and I thought they're priced pretty much the same.
Your car has more standard features than ours, but if we had opted for the same features they'd be effectively the same price (obviously I don't know how much you paid for yours). I didn't find significant price differences between any of SPA vehicles with comparable tech / features. I didn't do a spreadsheet or anything. Where there's more vehicle, I'd expect a little more on the price...

You truly have no idea what you're talking about. The 340i is faster in every measurable metric compared to a is350 f sport. Lexus has been left behind in performance metrics. They are using the same engine in the 2018 is350 they used in 2006! But they certainly are reliable!
The 340i drives better and is MUCH faster. The Lexus will still be running when BMW is in the junkyard.

I don't make up what gets posted in magazines. although the specific comparison I was referencing was against the 335.

This is an odd moment. Here we have a BMW 3 Series—the car that once ruled tests like this, the machine that was for decades everything we wanted in a sport sedan—in second place. In other news, up is down, hot is cold, black is a nice shade of eggshell, and this magazine is now about cats.
Okay, that's all gibberish. But for the first time in memory, the top-of-the-line 3 Series leaves us wanting. The basic ingredients haven't changed: You get rear-wheel drive; a longitudinally mounted straight-six; near-50/50 weight distribution; and a mind-reading transmission (eight-speed automatic in the case of our test car, but unlike the other cars here, a six-speed manual is still available). The cockpit is simple, purposeful, and mostly uncluttered. Sports-car guys see what you're driving and nod in approval; regular citizens just think you're a yuppie jerk. So it goes.
It's the feel that's different. In the past, you put up with a Three's yuppie image and high cost of ownership because the Bavarians seemed to care the most about the intangibles. Telepathic steering. Forgiving, unflappable suspension that did what you wanted, whenever you asked. Other sport sedans were faster or more comfortable, but they never struck the same sense of balance. With the right options and engine, a 3 Series was sublime.
The balance is still there. The chassis still makes you look like a genius, and in normal driving, the BMW exudes a rare sense of effortlessness. The ZF-sourced gearbox is so quick-witted and smooth that you almost don't miss a clutch pedal. But the new-to-this-car electric power steering is heartbreakingly bland and distant. As with past 3 Series, the brakes are strong and communicative, but the world has caught up, and they're no longer special. The Lexus's pedal changes less when hot, and the Cadillac's Brembos are more linear and predictable. On the road, chasing the IS 350, the BMW seems to offer less usable grip; this means the driver works harder and has to pay more attention, which is usually a good thing. But the message has been diluted. If the last 335i whispered in your ear, this one just yells at you in staccato bursts.

E43 AMG

Ok, the notion that BMW always rules and Lexus is boring and not fun to drive is clearly false. The guy said there was a lot of ignorance in this thread while spouting some himself/

And let's not forget that OP isn't only talking the small cars. BMWs do horribly in other comparisons.
2017 mid size sedan comparison
4th place out of 5.
