It's one of the easiest degrees to get at any university and because of that there are too many "qualified" teachers which keeps wages low. Teaching should be a high wage career and becoming a teacher should me MUCH harder.

If you set the wages to a reasonable level, it will attract more talent and districts can be more choosy.

But I hear what you're saying. One of the reasons teaching certificates are 'easy' is the need for more teachers... due to low pay.

I haven't seen anyone mention the administrative expenses.

We spend just as much as anyone else per student and we can't pay our teachers? Where does the money go? Administrative positions and their bloated salaries.

Eh. That’s circular. There’s not really a “need for more teachers.” Principals rountinely get 200-300 apps for teaching positions in the STL area.

A good teacher is probably worth between $80,000-$110,000 depending on subject matter etc.

A bad teacher is worth $30,000.

Oddly enough, the good get paid the same as the bad.
