Pay $30 and be disappointed or pay nothing and have a blast? Honestly it just depends on what you're looking for. I've played both and prefer Fortnite.

PUBG is my choice. Yes I understand the game is still in development and it isn't perfect, but it is more fun to me. I just couldn't get the whole builder/shooter/fantasy aspect of Fortnite. I've always been a big fan of Battlefield and COD and 100% boots on the ground, so PUBG is my choice for the realistic approach.
I know I will get a lot of down votes, but that's okay. This is my opinion. Everyone has their preferences.

Nice try but Fortnite has been in production for like 6 years.
ETA: OP it really just depends on if you have friends playing either game and what you like more. Fortnite is more arcadey, has aim assist, and you can stairs and houses. Maps are smaller and the game is cartoony. PUBG on the other hand comes with its own problems. The optimization needs a ton of work and the newest patch is aiming at alleviating these problems. The patch is finished and undergoing testing so as long as there isn't any massive bugs in the new code you should see a massive improvement in the gameplay in the next 2 weeks. Another big thing is that PUB is only 30$ and you don't have to pay for the full version when it releases.

I'm with you on PUBG, but man I'm growing tired of the lack of updates to performance.
At this pace, who knows when the game will ever be complete.
Fortnite certainly is much more optimized and looks better. The art style and building components throw me off of it though.

I haven’t played PUBG, but I haven’t been addicted to playing an online game like I am with fortnite since Halo 2/MW2.

That is incorrect.
Fortnite PVE was announced 6 years ago. They had hold ups.
They did not start the Battle Royale development until 2017. It is a separate team.

I think the obvious answer is to try Fortnite for free to see if you like it before you spend money on PUBG.

I recognize that Fortnite is a better game, especially given how rough PUBG run on my OG Xbone, but I still prefer playing PUBG.
