"The party" has zero say in who runs or who calls themselves a republican thanks to our Open Primary system. Anyone can run as whatever party they want to register as.

I don't understand how few people understand that.

All the state GOP can do is help provide organization and fundraising, where Vitter already had all of that in place. The State GOP could denounce their multi-term U.S. Senator all the want and it wouldn't have done a thing to him.

Who do you think most republican voters in Louisiana trust more: Villere or Vitter?
