I'd offer him a 2+1, a 3+1 and a 5. Then I'd show him the cap projections and what he could make by opting out early. 3+1 might actually be the best compromise. He doesn't potentially leave any money on the table that he could have gotten from another team, and if he gets back to being himself he can opt out and get raised to the 35% max under a higher cap. If he is still a really good player the Pels get him at a reduced rate for one more year than a 2 + 1, and if he's not, it's one year shorter than a 5 and with any luck he's expiring at an opportune time during a rebuild so you can trade him for a 1st and a bad contract.
