Teams throw it to 1st and 1st tags bag for a couple of reasons:
1.) In case of dropped strike...already thrown to 1st
2.) Allow catcher and 1st baseman to communicate throws for instances that might actually occur in a game...bunt plays, snap throws, throw downs on dropped third strike.
