What people fail to understand is that people in the service e industry generally make shite hourly wages(varies by state)because they are expected to make tips

What? No. Where the hell did that come from? You expect all service industry employees to receive supplementary tips?

I tip to-go, but only b/c I'm sympathetic and have been there before. But that station doesn't do enough to earn a servers tip, and they should have no expectation of one. To-go is not making $2.13/hr, and if they are, that's a management problem, not a customer problem. And it's not up to customers to determine if they are underpaid. One of the reasons people order to-go to avoid an extra 20% on top of their food. Someone packing boxes and answering phones doesn't change that.

I don't think that's why people order to go....

That's not always true. Most restaurants the people putting together the order is either the bar or the normal wait staff.
